Cosmetic Procedures
Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty can rejuvenate puffy, sagging or tired-looking eyes by removing excess fat, skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. It may be performed for cosmetic reasons or to improve sight by lifting droopy eyelids out of the patient’s field of vision. The procedure is usually performed in an office with local anesthesia in as little as 45 minutes. Blepharoplasty can be combined with injectables such as BOTOX to raise the eyebrows or reduce the appearance of wrinkles, crow’s feet or dark circles under the eyes.
BOTOX Cosmetic
BOTOX® Cosmetic is commonly used to reduce or eliminate the appearance of facial wrinkles. It is injected under the skin into areas surrounding the eyes, forehead and mouth to smooth crow’s feet, frown and worry lines, and lines on the neck. Made from a purified protein, BOTOX® relaxes wrinkles and gives the face a rejuvenated look. BOTOX® may also be useful for migraine headaches, excessive sweating, and eye and neck muscle spasms.
Collagen
Collagen is a naturally occurring protein found in the second layer of skin (the dermis) which “plumps up” the skin, joints, bones and ligaments. Injections counteract the effects of gravity, sun exposure and years of facial muscle movement by filling out sunken areas and smoothing lines for a rejuvenated look. Results may begin to fade in a few months, depending on the patient’s age, genetic background, skin quality, lifestyle and body site. Because of this, and because injections cannot improve severe wrinkles or deep folds, the procedure is often combined with facial resurfacing or plastic surgery for a more satisfying and longer-lasting outcome.
Juvederm™
Juvéderm is an injectable gel that gently reverses many signs of aging in the face, including fine lines and wrinkles, crow’s feet, thinning lips and loosening skin. It can also “plump up” the lips, sculpt the cheeks, and restore a youthful oval shape to the face. It is made with hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the body that works with collagen and elastin to give volume and support to the skin. Because it is non-animal-based and highly biocompatible, no pre-treatment testing is needed. Juvéderm comes in three formulas optimized for the depth of the area being treated. Results last about 6-9 months and can be made to last even longer with a simple follow-up treatment a few weeks after the initial injection.
Juvederm™ Voluma® XC
JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC is the first and only FDA-approved filler to correct age-related volume loss in the midface in adults over the age of 21. JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC injectable gel is indicated for deep (subcutaneous and/or supraperiosteal) injection for cheek augmentation to correct age-related volume deficit in the mid-face in adults over the age of 21.
Laser Hair Removal
Whether for hygienic or cosmetic reasons, women and men who are tired of temporary, often painful methods of removing unwanted hair on the face, back, legs or other body areas may welcome laser hair removal with relief. Lasers produce highly focused, intense beams of light. Dark pigments in the hair follicles beneath the skin’s surface absorb this light and convert it to heat, destroying the follicles and preventing hair growth for up to two years. Multiple treatments are required for complete hair removal. Treatments are needle-free and do not require anesthesia. Most patients feel nothing more than a slight sting like the snap of a rubber band. It is possible that some hair will grow back, though it is usually finer and lighter than what was originally removed. There may also be some redness and swelling following the procedure.
Otoplasty
Ear surgery for children or adults can set prominent ears back closer to the head and reduce the size of large ears. Surgery may also be helpful for “lop ear,” “cupped ear” and “shell ear,” large or stretched earlobes, and lobes with creases and wrinkles. The procedure lasts from two to three hours and may be performed in a hospital, office-based facility or an outpatient surgery center under general or local anesthesia.
Photorejuvenation
The natural consequences of aging on our skin include sun damage, freckles, age spots, acne scarring, enlarged pores, and redness caused by broken capillaries and rosacea.
Photorejuvenation reduces these signs of aging using non-invasive, painless pulses of light. Treatments can also improve the appearance of birthmarks and uneven pigmentation and stimulate the production of collagen. There is no recovery time and low risk of complications. Multiple sessions of about 20 minutes each are performed every few weeks until the desired result has been achieved.
Rhinoplasty
One of the most common plastic surgery procedures, rhinoplasty is performed to reshape, reduce or augment a person’s nose, remove a hump, narrow nostril width, change the angle between the nose and the mouth, or to correct injury, birth defects, or other problems that affect breathing. Results depend on the patient’s nasal bone and cartilage structure, facial shape, skin thickness and age (teenagers should have had their growth spurt). Insurance may cover rhinoplasty if it is done for reconstructive or medical reasons, but likely not for cosmetic purposes.
Rhinoplasty is usually an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia and lasts one to two hours unless more extensive work needs to be done. Surgeons use one of two techniques: the incision is either made within the nostrils, thus hiding scars after surgery, or across the columella (the vertical strip of tissue separating the nostrils) in an “open” procedure, where scars are small and hidden on the underside of the base. In both procedures the skin is lifted, the bone and cartilage sculpted, and the skin replaced and stitched closed.
For a short time after surgery you may experience puffiness, nose ache or a dull headache, some swelling and bruising, bleeding or stuffiness. Most patients feel like themselves within two days and return to work in about a week. Contact lenses can be worn immediately but glasses will have to be taped to your forehead or propped on your cheeks for up to seven weeks. Complications are rare and, when they occur, minor. These may include infection, nosebleed, or a reaction to the anesthesia.
Sculptra® Aesthetic
Sculptra is an injectable product that restores and corrects the signs of facial fat loss by replacing lost volume. Facial fat loss, or lipoatrophy, is the loss of fat beneath the skin, which can result in sunken cheeks, indentations, and hollow eyes. Sculptra provides a gradual and significant increase in skin thickness, improving the appearance of folds and sunken areas. The results from Sculptra are not immediate but they are long-lasting. In a clinical study, effects lasted for up to two years after the first treatment session in most patients. No skin testing is required.
